The New Braunfels Fire Department recently sponsored a Fire Safety Poster Contest open to all third graders in the city. Thirteen schools, both public and private, participated and the submitted posters were judged by Fire Department staff members.
The students competed within their own schools so each school had one
winner. The winners received prizes including fire prevention swag,
tumblers, a fifty dollar gift card to Wal-Mart and a ride to their school in a
fire truck. Winning posters from each school are currently on display in
the lobby at City Hall, 550 Landa Street.
Participating schools included: Memorial Elementary, Walnut Springs Elementary,
Lone Star Elementary, Lamar Elementary, Clear Springs Elementary, Oak Creek
Elementary, Hoffman Lane Elementary, Morningside Elementary, First Baptist Kids
Academy, Cross Lutheran School, Saints Peter and Paul Catholic School, New
Braunfels Christian Academy, and I Cento School.
“The theme for the poster contest was Practice Fire Escape Drills in the Home,”
said Lieutenant Michael Skelton. “The response to this contest has been
amazing. Most of the parents I have talked with said that their kids came
home and not only worked on the poster but got the whole family involved in
planning and practicing what to do in case of fire or other emergencies.
This is very exciting because the whole purpose was to get kids and families
involved in being prepared and staying safe.”
