Third Teen Court Academy Slated

New Braunfels Municipal Court is excited to launch its third Teen Court Academy this April. The academy will consist of nine sessions that will be held Tuesday evenings at New Braunfels Municipal Court. Teenagers will receive education in topics such as

ethics, the court system, trial processes, case preparation, rules of evidence, direct and cross examination, criminal offenses and punishment, opening and closing statements, roles of attorneys, public speaking, objections and perjury, resume writing, interviewing and leadership skills.

The curriculum has been developed by attorneys, judges and other community members from New Braunfels, who will also educate teenagers in the judicial system while training them to be defense and prosecuting attorneys in Teen Court.

A juvenile referred to Teen Court normally has his/her case argued by a teen prosecutor and teen defense attorney. A jury of the defendant’s peers, other teens, deliberate and decide on a binding punishment for the defendant. If the defendant successfully completes the sentence in a specified amount of time the defendant’s case is dismissed.

Students currently in grades eighth through eleventh are invited to submit applications to New Braunfels Municipal Court.  The academy is scheduled to begin April 10th and run through August 6, 2018. Applications are found at http://www.nbtexas.org/TeenCourt and should be submitted by March 20, 2018.

Questions should be directed to the Juvenile Case Manager at (830) 221-4185 or nherrera@nbtexas.org .
