The main library, on Common Street, will be closed from Monday May 21st through Friday May 25th to facilitate several renovation projects and maintenance. The RIOmobile and the Westside Community Center library will be open,
and additional service hours will be added to the Westside
library branch during this period.
The Westside library will be open Monday May 21st through Thursday,
May 24th from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. On Friday, May 25th, it
will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. On Saturday, May 26th, all
facilities will resume their regular schedules. All facilities will be
closed on Monday, May 28th in observance of Memorial Day.
Work at the main library will include replacing the lobby lighting,
transitioning the fixtures from halogen bulbs to LED lights. This will
save thousands of dollars in energy costs and maintenance fees and improve the
quality of the lighting overall.
The children’s area will have a door added for direct access to the meeting
room and the City is also replacing all the aging public computers, and some of
the associated servers, to improve public computing capability.
“These projects are essential to the proper operation of the library and are
going to make our summer run much more smoothly. The computer upgrade has
been needed for a while, but it is a major project that is difficult to
complete while the building is open to the public,” said Library Director
Gretchen Pruett. “We are hoping to minimize the impact to our customers
by operating out of the Westside Library this week, keeping it open the same
hours as the main facility is normally.”
While the main collection cannot be accessed in person, library customers are
encouraged to put desired items on hold, and they will be pulled and
transported to the Westside library the following day. Any holds not
picked up by Saturday morning will be moved back to the main library by noon
that day. Library staff will be answering the phones to assist customers
as well as working on collection maintenance and continuing education during
the renovation period.
