Recipes for the Soul: New Braunfels Cemetery Committee Releases First-Ever Cookbook

Recipes for the Soul Cover

If you’ve ever wondered about the “She made the best meatloaf” inscription on the headstone at Comal Cemetery, you can now read the story behind the inscription…and try the recipe for yourself!

Just in time for the fall holidays, the New Braunfels Cemetery Committee has released a truly unique cookbook with stories and firsthand accounts commemorating the traditional (and sometimes very unique) recipes that have been served at local funerals, wakes, and memorials over the decades.

If you’ve ever wondered about the “She made the best meatloaf” inscription on the headstone at Comal Cemetery, you can now read the story behind the inscription…and try the recipe for yourself!

Recipes for the Soul was assembled by Vicki Hamel and Raenel Schertz, two Texans with deep ties to their local heritage.  Commissioned by the New Braunfels Cemetery Committee, all proceeds from sales of the book will go toward cemetery preservation in New Braunfels.

Inside Recipes for the Soul, you’ll find traditional, easy to transport dishes, libations for reminiscing (and loosening the tongue), hearty meals to feed the mourning, and plenty of advice, comfort, and good fun!  From appetizers like deviled eggs and beer bread to classic meals like menudo and rouladen, Recipes for the Soul is a compendium of tantalizing recipes, tales of love and loss, a bit of New Braunfels history, and tips for soothing the soul.

“The photographs and artwork set the mood and invite you into our cemeteries to relax in the beauty where quiet memories abound,” said New Braunfels Parks and Recreation Director Stacey Dicke.

Recipes for the Soul is available for $35.00 per book and can be ordered online at www.nbtexas.org/cookbook.  A copy of the cookbook will also be donated to the New Braunfels Public Library in order to make it available for check-out by library patrons.
