Scheduling Downtown Special Events & Street Closures
Hosting events in the Downtown area requires careful consideration of the impacts of the events and requires coordination with the City to mitigate negative impacts on commerce and traffic and to ensure the safety of the attendees. The City's Street Closure/Special Event Ordinance outlines the requirements for applicants requesting the closure of Downtown rights of way. TIRZ #3 - Downtown
In 2021, the City established a tax increment reinvestment zone for the Downtown area. The Downtown TIRZ will capture 85% of the ad valorem tax increment within the project boundaries to reinvest into the area. City Council will appoint a board of directors for the Downtown TIRZ in 2022. For more information, please review the TIRZ #3 Project and Finance Plan.
Main Street Program
New Braunfels has been in the Texas Historical Commission's (THC) Texas Main Street Program since 1999. We operate under the THC four principles of: encouraging cooperation and building leadership in the business community; creating a positive image for downtown by promoting the downtown as an exciting place to live, shop, work, and invest; guide and assist in improving the downtown appearance; and to champion implementation of the Downtown Implementation Plan.
San Antonio Street Safety Improvements
San Antonio Street through Downtown New Braunfels is a busy roadway with a mixture of pedestrian activity, vehicular traffic, and on-street parking. In some areas, these multiple uses can cause conflicts that make it difficult for drivers and unsafe for pedestrians. The City has identified a series of improvements to provide greater ease of movement for drivers, safety for pedestrians, and preserve on-street parking spaces. Primarily, these improvements are concentrated at the intersections of San Antonio Street and Academy Avenue, Comal Avenue, and Market Street and consist of adding curb extensions at the intersections to allow pedestrians and vehicles better visibility in the area.
Concept drawings for this project have been developed and the City is proceeding with a pilot project to demonstrate the concept, solicit feedback, and make refinements to the project prior to progressing to a more permanent solution.
