Effective at 10am on this date (6/3/16), the Comal River in New Braunfels will be open again for recreation. As of this release, the Comal River flow is at approximately 475cfs. Minor amounts of debris have been cleaned up and minor repairs have been made to the wire guardrails at the Tube Chute Dam. River-goers should be aware of potentially submerged debris and should always use caution when on area waterways. And NBPD advises that everyone wear a life jacket when participating in water recreation.

It should be noted that the National Weather Service forecast includes more rain chances, with the possibility of heavy rain. Those factors will play a role in future decisions made by city officials. The New Braunfels Police Department would like to remind area drivers to use caution on area roads. Slow down, leave plenty of room between you and the person in front of you, and always remember: TURN AROUND, DON’T DROWN.

Meanwhile, the release rate from Canyon Dam is currently at approximately 3100cfs which increases to approximately 3250cfs inside the city limits of New Braunfels. That flow is too fast to allow most forms of recreation (including tubing, and most forms of rafting and kayaking). Guided trips on the Guadalupe River are allowed, so contact local river outfitters for details. As the level of Canyon Lake is brought back to its normal level of 909-feet above sea level, the flow of the Guadalupe River will be lowered and more recreational opportunities will be made available.
