On today’s date (04-20-19), at approximately 12:00pm, the New Braunfels Police Department and the New Braunfels Fire Department were called to the 100 block of South Academy Avenue for a report of two suspicious devices found by a resident.
The resident had recently purchased the contents of a storage unit and, after bringing the contents of the unit to his residence on South Academy Avenue, he found the possibly explosive items. The resident then called New Braunfels Police, and NBPD called in the San Antonio Police Department Bomb Squad and the ATF (Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms) to assist with the situation.
As a precaution, the resident’s home was evacuated and that portion of South Academy Avenue was closed while the SAPD bomb squad safely detonated the items at the scene. The controlled detonations successfully rendered the items safe, and caused no injuries or damages. It has since been determined that the items were actually small blasting caps used for construction purposes that were being stored incorrectly. Based on this determination, there will be no further investigation into this incident.
The section of South Academy Avenue that had been closed has since been reopened. NBPD would like to thank the SAPD Bomb Squad and the ATF for their assistance and quick response to today’s incident.
